Short term goals - I would like to know how to use photoshop, aperture and light room with a bit more confidence. I am going to invest in some more reading materials so that I can have more of an idea what is expected of either an amateur or professional photographer. I have been reading a book called The rough guide to digital photography by Sophie Goldsworthy, this has helped me a lot with how to use my camera and how to use other items that are needed in the photography business.
Long term goals - I am a very determined person and I am going to achieve a grade that is the best of my ability but I would love to walk away with a distinction, this is what I am aiming for.
On the 27/9/2011 I attended Katy Suggitts lecture on personal development planning, this is when we created our blogs on Blogspot and also registered ourselves on Flickr.
I managed to create the blog and register myself on Flickr and then I also created the link from my blog to my photostream on Flickr.
I am now able to put on each page what I have been doing in all my lectures, this actually helps as you can go over what you have learnt in the class. I will be using my blog very regularly.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
On the 4/10/2011 we received a piece of paper with a few questions on about our blog,
1. How are you using your blog?
I am using mine to type up what I have learnt in the lectures and to also help me remember what we talked about in the lecture, when you are typing out what you have learnt it tends to stay in your mind alot more than if you was to just read it.
2. What is the appropriate style of language to use?
Typing out your work to the best of your ability and spell checking it, no swearing and using words that actually appear in the English dictionary, not slang.
3. How can you ensure it appears professional?
Making sure that all your spellings are correct, using the correct punctuation and the correct grammar. You could also get somebody to look at your work to see what they think.
4. In addition to class notes; what else can you include in your blog?
I have included a lot of background research that I have either found on the Internet or in books. I have used images of the Internet and also uploaded images that I have taken.
5. What is meant by referencing?
Referencing your work by creating a bibliography so that people can see where you have found some of your information on your blog pages.

Case study 11/10/2011
I have to consider the practice of a contemporary professional photographer in terms of the trajectory of their career.
I am writing my case study on a photographer called Stephen DiRado, he was born in 1957 and is an American photographer. His work is mostly black and white and he makes frequent use of large-format cameras. He is mainly famous for his portraiture, night-astronomical photography and semi-composed group photography, also for the extensive length in his projects.
Stephen started his education in 1976 were he attended the School of the Worcester Art museum to gain a certificate in art, he completed this course in 1979. He then went on to Massachusetts College of arts to complete a BFA between 1979 - 1981.
Here are a few of the competitions Stephen was put up for:

1989 Finalist, Ruttenburg Foundation Award
1987 Fellowship, Massachusetts Artist Foundation
1986 State Finalist, Massachusetts Artist Foundation

She is a well known photographer and if she had stayed in Germany this may have never happened, she has made her self known in London for taking pictures of all sorts of animals.

Her current project is called Dark.
I think her work would appeal to most audiences as it is so diverse, her images are that beautiful anyone's eye would get caught, I could easily sit down for hours and look through all her photographs, I showed some of the images to my niece and she was fixated and then i showed them to my mum and she had so many positive things to say about them,
Many people have given comments about Britta's work,

On the 1/11/2011 we had to do any work that needed doing, so I researched a lot of things that we talked about in Chris Aughtons lecture the day before. Some of us also got to have a tutorial with Katy, I was very pleased with the result I got from my PDP blog. The main thing I needed to do was to add my short term goal and my long term goal, I have done this and it has actually gave me more of a clear mind. I will carry on posting all of what I am learning and the research I am doing on my blog.

Andy - Yes, I have clients, thank god! Mainly the work comes via my agent from ad agencies.
On the 22/11/2011 we looked into reflective practice,
"reflective practice involves thoughtfully considering your own experiences as you make the connection between knowledge and practice, under the guidance of an experienced professional within your discipline"

- The mall series
- Beach people
- Dinner series
- Jacobs house
- With Dad
- Body
All of these are long term documentary projects that explore the structures and identities of communities, families, couples, groups and individuals. I think his photography would appeal to all types of audiences as its all about everyday life, he is photographing what is important to him which in most cases is what is important to most people.
I think over time he has become more adventurous with the kind of angles he could be shooting from, but he has always shoot in black and white. Stephen doesn't take as many photographs at the moment as he is working as a senior lecturer in Photography, Clark University, Visual and Performing arts, Worcester, MA.

Her current project is called Dark.
I think her work would appeal to most audiences as it is so diverse, her images are that beautiful anyone's eye would get caught, I could easily sit down for hours and look through all her photographs, I showed some of the images to my niece and she was fixated and then i showed them to my mum and she had so many positive things to say about them,
Many people have given comments about Britta's work,
‘Britta Jaschinski’s pictures are occasionally surrounded by an almost mystic, religious aura.’ The Photographers’ Gallery
‘Britta Jaschinski’s photographs heighten our sense for the dignity of the living creature. ’ International Award for Young Photojournalism
I don't think her work has changed over time, she started with taking photographs of animals and she still photographs animals, she may have become more adventurous with how she takes them. Her work has always been outstanding and I think she will carry on capturing animals for many years as she loves what she does, she has a passion and it defiantly shows through her images.
Here is a link to an interview that Britta had with CAPS (captive animals protection society),

I emailed Andy Rudak a couple of weeks ago asking him if he could help me with one of case studies by answering some questions for me, he has been nice enough to email me back and answer all of my questions in full.
I am going to add all of the answers he has given me but I am also going to add the research that I have been doing. I will state if the things you are reading are what Andy has written or what I have researched.
Andy -Mini life story coming up:
I was never really interested in photography when i was younger, i didn't have a camera from the age of six or anything like that, i kind of fell into it to be honest. I was at collage studying for my A levels in psychology and sociology when, as part of a interview exercise, we were asked to film each other conducting the interviews. I was asked to operate the video camera, and from that moment just knew thats where i wanted to be. At first i wanted to get into being a war cameraman, but i saw sense and thought 'normal' film making would suit me better. After dropping out of my A levels, i went to art collage to do a foundation course, this involved graphic design, animation, film and photography. Whist i thought the film making was what i wanted, i found it very frustrating having to rely photography on lots of other people to help make the short films etc... of course everyone wanted to spend time on their own projects... i decided to put more of my efforts into the photography side. We had one small studio on the site and i basically took it over as no-one else seems that interested. I loved using the lights to make 'things' look good, and from that found myself getting interested in the packaging and advertising side of photography. I always dreamed of the big silk cut ads and the iconic billboards on the side of the road. as time drew on( it was a two year course) i spent more and more time in the studio and when it came time to do the collage applications i went for the photography hnds and degrees. I applied for all the courses along the south coast to be honest i was living in N wales and hated it. I also applied to the course at Blackpool, i know it was up north, but at the time it was the top course for advertising photography. I was offered an interview at Bournemouth collage, but they turned me down. As the replies came back from the other courses i had no-one offering me a place, i was pretty upset. Then i received a letter from Blackpool asking me to come for an interview. I couldn't believe it when a few weeks later they sent me a letter saying i had got in!
After the summer i started at Blackpool collage of art, I wasn't impressed at first, far to much writing and learning about things that didn't interest me, but as time went on i was given 'the nod' so i could forget about the boring stuff and stay in the studio and shoot. I was in heaven. I think i was maybe one of the last lucky ones as we were doing 3 course at once, HND, Degree and a PQE exam thing. Now it's degree only and much more written work...
I left collage with a portfolio of pictures and a Desmond (2.2), but i got distinction for my HND and PQE thing which was nice. I came down to London, as this is were you need to be if you want to take advertising seriously(in the UK), don't let anyone tell you different. I freelanced as an assistant for a year or two scraping by and living on pizza, i was always a bit careful about who i worked with. I didn't want to work with just anybody. I was lucky to get to work with one of my heros Mike Parsons as a second assistant, and then eventually fist assistant. Mike shot the ad's i had always loved i.e. silk cut, absolute, virgin Atlantic etc I was with Mike for about 5-6 years.
Andy - London was my first choice, it has to be if you want to take it seriously, i moved down the week after i finished collage, but i would also come down in my holidays to get work experience and try to meet people ready to try and get work for when i left.
Me - As Andy has already stated, London has a lot more to offer for what he wanted to achieve than Wales did, he wanted to see his work on the big billboards and on the sides of buses, this sort of photography wants to be seen in a big City.
Andy - I won a few things at collage, and now i get to win things through the awards in the advertising world which is cool. I have just joined the aop, which i never used to bother with, so i will try and enter that now, but it is Cannes and D&AD that are more important to me.
Me - Andy has quite a lot of clients,
- Coca cola
- Mcdonalds
- Marmite
- Transport if London - Oyster
- Tropicana
- Waitrose
- HSBC
- Dont drink and drive campaign
- Sainsbury's finance/pet insurance/life insurance
- The guardian newspaper
- NHS
- Volks wagen
- Nikon
there are quite a few more but there is just a few of the clients that Andy has.
Andy - I have been in a couple of magazines, but i shoot in advertising so normally its up on billboards or on Bus sides etc... i think it's cooler. I am planning to some exhibitions soon with the death maze and cardboard homes projects.
Me - I think his work appeals to everybody, most people at one time or another go out and buy something, be it from insurance for their car or beer for themselves, Andy has photographed it. So many people will have actually viewed Andy's work, he has photographed so many different things and each one will appeal to someone different but their will always be someone out there interested.
Andy - Has my work changed? Yes i think so, i have always been well into stories and ideas, i think that is what appeals about advertising..i think, i hope, i'm getting better at telling them in my shots.. I'm getting more ambitious too with my set ups. I am still pretty young to be where i'm at in photography and to have achieved what i have, so i hope there is still lots to come yet!.
Andy has kind enough to answer these questions for me, he has been very pleasant to talk to and we are going to carry on emailing each other because he is interested in what I am learning at university and I would like to know more about what he knows about photography.
Some examples off Andy's assignment work,
Also a couple of examples of his personal photographs,
He is such an inspiration to me, I love all of his work and he has so much to give, he enjoys taking photographs that much that even though he does it as a full time job he also takes a lot of photographs in his personal time.

We then had to go and take a photograph of something that we think reflects us as a person, I choose to take a picture of a lift because my moods have a tendency to go up and down because of how sensitive and caring I am towards other people.
This is the image I have taken, Martin also asked us to use something different on our blogs instead of writing so I am using this image that I have taken.
Martin then asked us to sell ourselves on ebay, not literally but to just use the same sort of setup and ideas of what they use on that website.
So I first looked at what ebay looks like,

It shows an image on the left and then it has a discription of the item.
